ASIATODAY.ID, KOLAKA – The Indonesian government through the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources supports PT Ceria Nugraha Indotama (CNI) to become a pioneer in the Electric Vehicle (EV) Battery ecosystem.
“Hopefully PT CNI will become a pioneer of Electric Vehicle Batteries in Indonesia,” said the Director of Mineral Business Development, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources of the Republic of Indonesia, Yose Rizal while monitoring the construction of the CNI Group nickel mineral processing and refining facility (smelter) in Wolo District, Regency. Kolaka, Southeast Sulawesi, Tuesday, November 28 2023.
As a National Vital Object and National Strategy Project, PT CNI, which is one of the Domestic Investments, has received great attention from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.
Moreover, according to the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, according to Yose, the nickel downstreaming launched by President Joko Widodo involves many domestic entrepreneurs as hosts in their own country.
Because of this, Yose Rizal hopes that PT CNI will always communicate with his party, especially if there are problems related to licensing and that the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources will immediately resolve them.
“Communicate if there are any problems related to permits. If the documents are correct and complete according to statutory requirements, we will immediately complete them within a day or two,” said Yose Rizal.
Meanwhile, President Director of PT CNI, Abdul Haris Tatang expressed his appreciation to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources for really caring about PT CNI, as well as establishing it as a National Vital Object and National Strategic Project.
“Currently, PT CNI’s smelter facilities, all machines and materials from China have arrived in Wolo, and most of them have been installed and then the remaining few percent will be continuously installed,” he explained.
The PT CNI smelter uses 2 main technologies, namely Rectangular Rotary Kiln Electric Furnace (RKEF) technology with a capacity of 4×72 MVA, consisting of 4 production lanes to process Nickel Saprolite ore which is targeted for completion in 2024 and High Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL) technology for processing Limonite Nickel ore (lower grade Nickel ore) to produce electric vehicle batteries which is targeted for completion in 2026.
“HPAL processing will have a production capacity of 293,200 tonnes in the form of Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate (MHP) which contains 120,000 tonnes of nickel metal and more than 11,500 tonnes of cobalt,” said Tatang.
The total production capacity of the RKEF nickel smelter will be able to produce around 252,000 tons of Ferronickel (FeNi) with a content of 22% Nickel or around 55,600 tons of Nickel in it. This FeNi product will be further processed and converted into Ni Matte with a content of 74% Nickel, which will be used as raw material for making electric vehicle batteries.
“Preparations for the Ni Matte Factory have entered procurement of equipment and construction will be carried out in the first quarter of 2024,” said Tatang.
Tatang further emphasized that all industrial and mining development activities carried out by PT CNI and its supporting facilities apply the principles and rules of Environment, Social and Governance (ESG). (AT Network)
