ASIATODAY.ID, MOROWALI – The smelter of the Chinese company, PT Gunbuster Nickel Industri (GNI) in North Morowali Regency, Central Sulawesi, caught fire again, on Thursday, December 28 2023 afternoon. The fire occurred at smelter 2 belonging to PT GNI.
The PT GNI smelter fire incident was widely circulated on social media. A fire was seen burning down one of the buildings. Workers panicked and tried to extinguish the fire using heavy equipment.
Head of the Public Relations Division of the Central Sulawesi Regional Police, Police Commissioner Djoko Wienarno, confirmed that the PT GNI nickel smelter caught fire at 17.20 WITA.
Djoko confirmed that there were no casualties in the fire incident. “The fire started at around 17.20 WITA. “The fire was quickly contained, there were no casualties,” said Djoko, Friday, December 29 2023.
He explained that the fire was caused by sparks from welding activities in one of the smelter areas.
This is not the first fire in the smelter area owned by PT GNI. On December 22 2022, a fire also occurred after PT GNI’s Smelter 2 Furnace Number 17 exploded.
The incident resulted in the deaths of two people, namely Nirwana Selle (20) and I Made Defri Hari Jonathan.
Previously, the smelter belonging to PT Indonesia Tsingshan Stainless Steel (ITSS) in Morowali, Central Sulawesi, exploded on Sunday, December 24 2023. A total of 59 workers were victims, 19 of whom died. Of that number, the 19 victims who died consisted of 8 Chinese workers and 11 Indonesian workers.
The nickel smelter belonging to PT ITSS exploded after workers repaired the plate installation on the furnace. A sudden explosion occurred, causing several oxygen cylinders around the area to explode. (AT Network)
