ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Toyota Astra Motor (TAM) is recalling five models cars that are already in the hands of consumers.
The causes of these recalls vary, but they are all related to problems with the car’s security and safety systems.
Henry Tanoto, Deputy President Director of TAM, said that this recall involves the Sienta, Avanza, Veloz, Yaris Cross and Vios.
“Toyota is carrying out this recall to guarantee product quality and maintain the safety and security of car owners’ journeys,” he said in his statement, Tuesday, February 13 2024.
He explained that the Sienta that was subject to the recall was produced from June 2016 – April 2020. The recall was carried out to inspect and repair the Front Garnish Pillar Clip on the A pillar.
TAM explained that there was a potential for water leaks because the sealer was not optimal, so it could disrupt the working of electrical systems such as sliding electric doors.
The Toyota Sienta is equipped with a Front Garnish Pillar which is attached to the front pillar or A pillar using a clip with a special sealer made from resin which is used to close the clip hole.
Due to the less than optimal resistance of the sealer in holding water, over time the Front Garnish Pillar will experience leaks so that water can flow from the front pillar into the electrical connection box located in the driver’s footwell.
“If this condition occurs, the connector in the electrical junction box can short circuit, causing the operation of certain electrical systems such as door locks, navigation systems, etc. to become incorrect,” said Henry.
In addition, the electric sliding doors on the Toyota Sienta can open suddenly when driving at any speed, thereby increasing the risk of accidents and injury to passengers.
The recall also involves Avanza and Veloz on November 2022 production models. The Front Door Side Impact Beam is required to be repaired, which is said to have been installed imperfectly.
Toyota considers that these components are at risk of not functioning properly, resulting in the car lacking optimal protection when hit by a side impact if the structure is not immediately repaired.
Toyota found that the process of welding the Side Door Beam on the right front side or the driver’s position was not correct. This condition is considered by TAM to make welding strength insufficient when needed in emergency situations.
If the Toyota Avanza and Toyota Veloz are operated continuously in this condition, the welded part of the Front Door Side Impact Beam may come off during a side impact.
TAM will add reinforcing brackets and welding points to the Side Door Impact Beam of the right front door.
Toyota is also recalling Veloz for the production year October 2021 – August 2023, Toyota Avanza November 2021 – September 2023, Toyota Vios June 2022 – August 2023 and Toyota Yaris Cross May – September 2023 due to possible problems with the front shock absorber nut.
TAM revealed that there were incorrect tightening instructions, which could cause the nuts to loosen and make abnormal sounds or even come loose, which could cause the vehicle to lose stability on the road.
In the worst situation, the nut can come loose, resulting in a loss of vehicle stability, causing the front shock to come off its mount and cause an accident when the car is speeding.
“Of course it will be dangerous because the front shock absorber could come off its seat and cause an accident when the car is speeding,” said Henry.
Anton Jimmi Suwandy, Marketing Director of TAM, explained that the company will bear the costs of repairing and replacing components.
“We ask consumers whose cars have been recalled to go to a repair shop and have their cars handled by experts,” said Anton. (ATN)
