ASIATODAY.ID, PORT MORESBY — The defense partnership between Indonesia, Australia, and Papua New Guinea (PNG) has taken a significant step forward with the inaugural Indonesia–Australia–PNG Ministers’ Trilateral Meeting held on Wednesday, December 3, 2025.
Indonesian Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin highlighted that this landmark meeting marks a key moment in strengthening regional security and stability in the Indo-Pacific.
Minister Sjafrie attended the meeting alongside Indonesia’s Ambassador to PNG, the Deputy Commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), and senior Ministry of Defense officials.
He expressed his appreciation for the invitation extended by PNG’s Defense Minister Billy Joseph and Australia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defense, Richard Marles.
Minister Sjafrie emphasized the importance of fostering strong neighborly relations through regular dialogue and intensive visits.
“The more we engage and visit one another, the stronger the sense of family between our countries,” he said.
He added that the trilateral framework opens opportunities to enhance practical cooperation and build long-term strategic trust.
“This meeting is a valuable opportunity to deepen defense collaboration between Indonesia, Australia, and PNG,” the Minister noted.
According to Sjafrie, the inaugural trilateral meeting represents a strategic milestone, reinforcing defense dialogue, operational collaboration, and positioning Indonesia as a key driver of regional security.
“We hope today’s discussions pave the way for closer engagement and strategic trust, benefiting our nations and the broader Indo-Pacific region,” he concluded.
