ASIATODAY.ID, WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump has officially signed the Taiwan Assurance Implementation Act, marking the first pro-Taiwan legislation enacted during his second term.

The move underscores strong bipartisan and executive-branch support for deepening U.S.–Taiwan relations amid growing strategic tensions in the Indo-Pacific.

The bill was approved by the U.S. House of Representatives on May 5, 2025 and passed the Senate on 18 November through unanimous consent.

Trump signed the legislation on 2 December, completing an unusually swift legislative process that reflects broad political consensus in Washington.

Strengthening Taiwan Assurance Act 2020

The new law reinforces the implementation of the Taiwan Assurance Act of 2020. It mandates the U.S. Department of State to regularly review its guidelines on engagement with Taiwan and submit updated reports to Congress at least every five years.

The requirement aims to ensure that U.S.–Taiwan relations remain stable, transparent, and strategically aligned.

Taiwan Welcomes the U.S. Support

Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) welcomed the legislation.

Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung expressed appreciation for continued U.S. support, noting that Taiwan will deepen cooperation with Washington under principles of mutual trust, mutual benefit, and shared strategic interests.

“Taiwan will maintain close communication with both Congress and the U.S. administration to expand collaboration across multiple sectors,” he stated quoted on Friday, December 5, 2025.

Common Values and Regional Stability

Presidential Office spokesperson Kuo Ya-hui said the newly enacted law reaffirms the importance of the U.S.–Taiwan partnership.

She described the act as a symbol of shared democratic values—freedom, democracy, and human rights—that underpin the long-standing relationship between the two sides.

Kuo emphasized that a stable U.S.–Taiwan relationship is essential for peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.

Taiwan, she said, will continue strengthening cooperation with the United States to contribute to global security, economic prosperity, and democratic resilience. (AT Network)
