ASIATODAY.ID, DAVOS – Former U.S. President Donald Trump smiled in satisfaction as Indonesia officially joined the Board of Peace, an international peace initiative aimed at addressing conflicts in Gaza and the wider Middle East. Indonesia was represented by President Prabowo Subianto following a direct invitation from Trump.
Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono described this move as a concrete step for Indonesia to contribute to global peace and the resolution of the Palestinian issue.
“Since last year’s United Nations General Assembly, President Trump presented a peace proposal that was further discussed in Egypt, leading to the establishment of this Board of Peace,” said Minister Sugiono on his official statement Friday, January 23, 2026.
The Board of Peace, according to Sugiono, plays a crucial role in overseeing Gaza’s transitional governance, stabilizing security, and coordinating reconstruction and rehabilitation. The council will operate through an international team of technocrats focusing on administrative and post-conflict reconstruction functions.
“Indonesia’s participation in the Board of Peace demonstrates a strategic and concrete step to support Palestine’s independence and resolve the Gaza conflict,” Sugiono added.
Indonesia and Islamic Nations Join, But Membership Comes at $1 Billion
Documents obtained from the Board of Peace charter reveal that permanent membership requires a contribution of USD 1 billion (approximately IDR 16.9 trillion) in the first year. It remains unclear whether Indonesia will join as a permanent or non-permanent member.
Foreign Ministers from Qatar, Egypt, Jordan, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Indonesia welcomed Trump’s invitation to join. Official documents will be signed following each country’s legal procedures.
Trump emphasized that this council is a unique global instrument for promoting peace, initially focused on Gaza but eventually aimed at addressing conflicts worldwide.
Board of Peace Structure and Authority
Trump will serve as Chair of the Board of Peace, with broad executive powers including veto rights and the ability to appoint members. Key figures on the Executive Council include former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.
The Board of Peace has a temporary UN Security Council mandate until 2027, exclusively for Gaza. It is authorized to deploy an International Stabilization Force and report progress to the UN every six months.
Global Response and Indonesia’s Diplomatic Strategy
So far, around 35 world leaders have accepted Trump’s invitation, including U.S. Middle East allies such as Israel, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Jordan, as well as countries like Turkey, Morocco, Pakistan, Kosovo, and Vietnam.
Sugiono emphasized that Indonesia’s participation is not only a matter of global diplomacy but also a recognition of Indonesia’s strategic position in promoting international peace.
The primary focus remains on Palestinian independence and sovereignty, including opening the Rafah border for humanitarian aid.
“A real Two-State Solution means Palestinian independence. The Board of Peace is a concrete alternative that we can hope will achieve this goal,” said Sugiono.
With Indonesia on board, Trump appeared relieved and optimistic. The Board of Peace is expected to be a tangible step toward resolving the Gaza conflict, strengthening international diplomacy, and bringing stability to the Middle East. (AT Network)
