ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA — The United Kingdom has officially released its 2026 travel warning list, placing several countries in the Asia-Pacific region, including Indonesia, under heightened risk advisories for British travelers.
The warning was issued by the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and covers a range of concerns, including security risks, political instability, natural disasters, and health threats. The advisory applies across multiple regions worldwide, from Europe and the Americas to Asia.
According to a report cited by The Independent on Tuesday, ecember 23, 2025, Indonesia has been classified under the category “avoid all travel to specific areas.”
Active Volcanoes in Indonesia Highlighted
The FCDO specifically urges British nationals to avoid areas surrounding several active volcanoes in Indonesia, citing the risks of eruptions, ash clouds, and potential disruptions to air travel and tourism activities.
The locations listed include: Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki, Mount Sinabung, Mount Marapi, Mount Semeru, Mount Ruang and Mount Ibu.
These warnings reflect Indonesia’s geological vulnerability as part of the Pacific Ring of Fire.
Southeast Asia Under Increased Scrutiny
Indonesia is not alone. Several Southeast Asian countries are also included in the UK’s travel warning framework, particularly for conflict-prone or border regions:
Myanmar: Chin, Kachin, Kayah, Kayin, Mon, Rakhine states, as well as Sagaing, Magway, Tanintharyi, and parts of Shan and Mandalay regions
Philippines: Western and central Mindanao and the Sulu Archipelago
Thailand: Southern provinces near the Malaysian border, the Hat Yai–Padang Besar railway line, and areas within 50 km of the Cambodian border
Cambodia: Areas within 50 km of the Thai border
Laos: Xaisomboun Province
The inclusion of these areas underscores ongoing concerns about regional security, separatist conflicts, and cross-border instability in parts of Southeast Asia.
71 Countries Worldwide Deemed High Risk
Out of 226 countries and territories reviewed by the FCDO, 71 have been designated as high-risk destinations, primarily due to armed conflict, terrorism, severe health risks, or legal systems incompatible with UK standards.
Countries under the strictest advisory — “avoid all travel” — include Afghanistan, Iran, Syria, Yemen, Russia, Mali, Niger, and Sudan. Meanwhile, North Korea is listed under “avoid all travel unless essential.”
Warning Sends Signal to Asia’s Tourism Industry
While the advisory does not constitute a travel ban, UK travel warnings are widely used as a reference by airlines, travel insurers, tour operators, and international investors. As such, the 2026 travel warning sends a clear signal to the Asia-Pacific tourism industry, particularly countries reliant on European visitors.
For Indonesia, the listing highlights the importance of disaster risk management, early warning systems, and transparent communication with international tourists to prevent long-term damage to its global tourism reputation. (AT Network)
