ASIATODAY.ID, GENEVA – The United Nations (UN), through the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), has issued a strong statement regarding the wave of nationwide protests in Indonesia that turned violent.
The UN stressed that security forces must exercise restraint and respect the people’s right to peaceful assembly and free expression.
OHCHR spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani, in an official release from Geneva (1 September 2025), said the UN is closely monitoring the nationwide demonstrations triggered by public outrage over parliamentary allowances, austerity measures, and allegations of excessive use of force by security personnel.
“We stress the importance of dialogue to address the public’s concerns. Authorities must uphold the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly,” Shamdasani declared.
UN Demands Transparent Investigations
The UN also called on the Indonesian government to conduct prompt, thorough, and transparent investigations into all alleged human rights violations, particularly regarding the use of excessive force by law enforcement. According to Shamdasani, accountability is crucial to restoring public trust.
“All security forces, including the military when deployed in law enforcement, must comply with the basic principles on the use of force and firearms in line with international standards,” she added.
Free Press Must Be Protected
OHCHR also underlined the vital role of the media in covering the protests in Indonesia. The UN emphasized that journalists must be allowed to report freely and independently, without intimidation or censorship.
Growing International Pressure
The UN’s statement adds to the mounting international pressure on the Indonesian government, which is already under heavy scrutiny over its handling of the demonstrations.
