ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The Government of Indonesia has received praise from the United States (U.S.) for its prompt response to the Reciprocal Tariff Policy announced by President Donald Trump. As a form of appreciation, Indonesia has become the first country officially invited to Washington DC to discuss the next steps regarding the policy.

Following the announcement of the Reciprocal Tariff Policy, many countries responded swiftly. However, the U.S. has since announced a 90-day delay in implementing the policy, now set to take effect on June 9, 2025.

In line with President Prabowo Subianto’s directive, the Indonesian Government will send a high-level delegation to conduct direct diplomatic negotiations with key U.S. officials. The working visit is scheduled for April 16–23, 2025, with meetings planned with the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR), the Secretary of the Treasury, and the Secretary of Commerce.

“Indonesia is one of the first countries invited to Washington DC. This reflects the recognition of Indonesia’s proactive stance and readiness,” stated Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, during a Limited Coordination Meeting held at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, Monday, April 14.

Minister Airlangga further explained that the Indonesian Government had previously submitted formal letters to the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, USTR, and the Secretary of the Treasury. To support the upcoming negotiations, Indonesia has prepared a comprehensive non-paper proposal addressing: Tariff adjustments and Non-Tariff Measures (NTMs), Trade and investment cooperation, Bilateral financial sector collaboration.

During the visit, Indonesia plans to propose a strategy to compensate the export-import delta by purchasing selected American products. The agenda will also include: Discussions on U.S. corporate investments in Indonesia, Exploration of Indonesian business expansion into the U.S. market

In addition to preparing for the U.S. visit, the Limited Coordination Meeting also addressed President Prabowo’s directives to establish a Layoffs Response Task Force and implement programs to expand job opportunities. Moreover, the Government is finalizing the formation of a Deregulation Task Force aimed at accelerating national economic reform.

“All of these initiatives are running in parallel. We aim to launch the policies soon, focusing on low-hanging fruits through strategic policy packages,” Minister Airlangga concluded. (AT Network)
