ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA — Indonesia is emerging as one of Asia’s most important cocoa processing centers, strengthening the region’s position in the global chocolate industry as demand for value-added cocoa products continues to grow.

The country’s cocoa processing sector recorded significant expansion in the second quarter of 2026, with grinding volume reaching 110,410 tons, up 30.1 percent from 84,844 tons in the previous quarter.

The growth comes as the global cocoa industry faces major challenges, including price volatility, supply pressures, and increasing demand for sustainable production. Indonesia’s rising processing capacity demonstrates the country’s ability to play a larger role in regional and global cocoa supply chains.

Rather than remaining primarily a supplier of raw cocoa beans, Indonesia is accelerating its transition toward a higher-value industrial model — processing cocoa locally, strengthening manufacturing capacity, and creating deeper connections with Asian and global markets.

Indonesia’s Expanding Role in Asia’s Cocoa Industry

Indonesia has become a major pillar of Asia’s cocoa processing sector, contributing around 49 percent of the region’s total cocoa grinding volume.

The country’s growing industrial capacity is helping strengthen Asia’s role in the global chocolate ecosystem, supplying processed cocoa ingredients for food, beverage, and confectionery industries across international markets.

The development reflects a broader regional trend, as Asian economies increasingly move from commodity-based trade toward value-added manufacturing and integrated supply chains.

From Cocoa Producer to Regional Industrial Hub

Indonesia’s cocoa strategy is centered on building a stronger ecosystem that connects farmers, processors, manufacturers, investors, and international buyers.

Beyond increasing production, the country is focusing on improving quality standards, supporting sustainable practices, and expanding the competitiveness of cocoa-based products in global markets.

The Indonesia International Cocoa Conference 2026, themed “The Rise of Indonesian Cocoa: The Pearl of Asia for the World,” highlights Indonesia’s ambition to position its cocoa industry as a regional benchmark for innovation, sustainability, and industrial growth.

As global demand for chocolate and processed cocoa products continues to expand, Indonesia’s cocoa transformation represents a significant opportunity for Asia to strengthen its role in one of the world’s most valuable food supply chains. (AT Network)
