ASIATODAY.ID, RIO DE JANEIRO — President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, officially participated in the 2025 BRICS Summit, held from July 6–7, 2025, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. His attendance marked a historic moment as Indonesia joined the summit for the first time as a full member of BRICS.

According to Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya, Indonesia’s participation in this year’s BRICS Summit represents a new chapter in the nation’s foreign diplomacy.

“The 2025 BRICS Summit is a milestone, as Indonesia officially took part for the first time as a full-fledged member. This was a direct initiative by President Prabowo,” Teddy stated during a press briefing in Rio de Janeiro on Monday, July 7, 2025.

Teddy explained that Indonesia’s accession to BRICS had been in progress since early 2025, receiving strong support from existing member states. As a result, Indonesia was formally accepted as the 10th full member, out of what is now an 11-nation alliance.

“Originally, BRICS consisted of five countries. Now, it has expanded, with Indonesia joining as the 10th official member. One other nation, Saudi Arabia, is still finalizing its membership process,” he clarified.

President Prabowo has long upheld a key principle in international relations: ‘A thousand friends are too few, one enemy is too many.’ Guided by this vision, Indonesia continues to strengthen international collaboration, with BRICS as one of its strategic platforms.

“The President wants Indonesia to be an active, collaborative player in the global arena. Our membership in BRICS is part of a broader strategy to enhance Indonesia’s international standing,” Teddy emphasized.

BRICS Now Represents Nearly Half the World’s Population

More than just a political symbol, BRICS has become a major force in the global economy. The bloc now represents nearly 50% of the world’s population and contributes about 35% of global GDP.

This year’s summit was attended by 28 nations, including 10 BRICS members, 10 partner countries, and 8 guest countries. Interest in joining BRICS continues to grow rapidly.

“The number of countries lining up to join BRICS is overwhelming. This proves that Indonesia is being heard, recognized, respected, and increasingly needed on the global stage,” Teddy concluded. (AT Network)
