ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Indonesia is stepping into a new era of national energy management.
President Prabowo Subianto officially inaugurated the membership of the National Energy Council (DEN), including government officials and key stakeholders, at the State Palace on Wednesday, January 28, 2026.
This milestone signals the government’s strategic push to strengthen energy sovereignty, security, and self-reliance, with nuclear energy identified as the top priority.
Energy Minister Bahlil Lahadalia, who serves as DEN’s Executive Chairman, emphasized that nuclear energy development is a cornerstone of Indonesia’s National Energy Plan.
While specific projects are still awaiting presidential directives, Bahlil stressed Indonesia’s commitment to reducing dependence on fuel imports and accelerating energy self-sufficiency.
“Currently, Indonesia imports over 30 million kiloliters of fuel annually. Our focus is to build energy independence step by step, aiming ultimately for full energy self-sufficiency,” Bahlil said after the inauguration.
Four Pillars of Indonesia’s Energy Policy
According to Bahlil, the government’s energy strategy under President Prabowo is structured around four key pillars:
– Energy Sovereignty – managing national energy without foreign intervention.
– Energy Security – boosting national energy reserves from 21 days to up to three months via modern storage facilities.
– Energy Independence – reducing fuel imports and maximizing domestic energy resources.
– Energy Self-Sufficiency – achieved gradually as the ultimate national energy goal.
DEN will hold its first meeting soon to finalize a comprehensive energy roadmap, including strategies to integrate nuclear power as a key renewable energy source.

President Prabowo highlighted the council’s commitment to ensuring continuous energy supply, consolidating cross-sector governance, and accelerating the transition to a self-reliant and sustainable energy system.
“Energy is a top national development priority. Our focus is energy security, independence, and self-sufficiency, always prioritizing the people’s interests,” Bahlil added.
