ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA — Indonesia has brought together delegates from 28 countries for the inaugural Indonesia International Search and Rescue (IISAR) 2026, reinforcing its ambition to become a regional hub for search and rescue (SAR) innovation, emergency preparedness, and humanitarian cooperation as climate-related disasters become more frequent and complex.
Held at the Nusantara International Convention Exhibition (NICE) in PIK 2, Tangerang, the four-day event convenes government officials, international organizations, emergency responders, technology developers, academics, and industry leaders to exchange expertise, strengthen operational cooperation, and showcase the latest advancements in search and rescue technology.
Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Pratikno said IISAR 2026 reflects the growing urgency of strengthening disaster preparedness as climate change intensifies natural hazards worldwide. As the world’s largest archipelagic nation located along the Pacific Ring of Fire, Indonesia faces persistent threats from earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, floods, and other hydrometeorological disasters.
“We must always be prepared for increasing uncertainty. Climate change continues to intensify disaster risks, while Indonesia’s geographical position demands constant readiness and rapid response,” Pratikno said.
He stressed that successful rescue operations depend not only on experience but also on advanced technology, highly trained personnel, and a strong commitment to humanitarian values.
“In emergency response, every minute counts. Modern technology, professional expertise, seamless coordination, and compassion are all essential to saving lives,” he said.
Pratikno added that effective SAR operations require close coordination among the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), the National Police, central and regional governments, and volunteer organizations.
Basarnas Chief Mohammad Syafii described IISAR 2026 as Indonesia’s first international SAR exhibition and conference, organized under the mandate of Law No. 29 of 2014 on Search and Rescue.
He said the event is designed to serve as a global platform for communication, education, coordination, and collaboration among governments, international organizations, humanitarian agencies, industry partners, and rescue professionals.
“IISAR provides an opportunity for the global SAR community to exchange knowledge, strengthen partnerships, and enhance operational readiness in responding to emergencies,” Syafii said.
The forum features discussions on internationally recognized rescue standards developed by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and the International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG), providing valuable references for improving rescue operations involving aviation accidents, maritime incidents, and natural disasters.
Beyond the conference sessions, IISAR 2026 hosts international SAR competitions that enable rescue teams from different countries to share operational experience and demonstrate best practices in emergency response.
A major highlight of the event is its SAR Technology Exhibition, featuring nearly 57 exhibitors from Indonesia and overseas.
The exhibition showcases cutting-edge emergency communication systems, aerial and maritime rescue platforms, land-based emergency response equipment, and underwater search technologies. Leading aerospace and technology companies, including PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) and Bell Helicopter, are presenting innovations designed to improve the speed, safety, and effectiveness of rescue missions.
According to Syafii, Basarnas hopes the exhibition will accelerate technology adoption and strengthen collaboration between government agencies and industry partners to enhance national and regional disaster response capabilities.
The exhibition is open to the public daily from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., allowing visitors to explore advanced rescue vehicles, specialized equipment, and next-generation SAR technologies. Around 1,500 visitors registered online on the opening day.
IISAR 2026 Founder Candra Tri Saktiyanto said the event aims to increase public awareness of the strategic importance of the search and rescue industry in protecting communities and strengthening emergency preparedness.
He expressed hope that IISAR would become a catalyst for strategic partnerships, technology transfer, human capital development, and deeper international cooperation in disaster management.
“National borders may separate countries, but humanity unites us all. We hope IISAR will become a milestone in advancing global collaboration in search and rescue and strengthening our shared commitment to saving lives,” Candra said. (Silvia Andriani)
