Indonesians No Longer Trust State Officials, Prabowo’s Leadership Under Scrutiny

A public demonstration was held in front of the Grahadi State Building, Jalan Gubernur Suryo, East Java. Special

ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Public distrust toward state officials in Indonesia has reached a boiling point. A wave of demonstrations that escalated into riots and looting of officials’ residences over the weekend has become clear evidence of the widening gap between the government and its people.

On Saturday (August 30, 2025), the homes of lawmakers Ahmad Sahroni, Eko Patrio, and Uya Kuya were looted by angry crowds. The residence of Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati in Bintaro, South Tangerang, was also ransacked by protesters later that night.

Protesters accused public officials of failing to listen to the people’s voices. The controversial decision to increase lawmakers’ allowances, along with the government’s ambitious tax revenue targets, has been denounced as a betrayal of public trust.

Sri Mulyani, who announced a 2026 tax revenue target of IDR 2,692 trillion, has become a symbol of economic policies seen as suffocating ordinary citizens. Meanwhile, statements from several lawmakers perceived as insensitive to the public’s hardships further inflamed anger.

“The people no longer trust their officials. Every policy seems designed to benefit the elite, while the suffering of ordinary citizens is ignored,” one protester declared in a viral video shared widely on social media.

Looting as a Symbol of Public Rage

Videos circulating online showed Sri Mulyani’s upscale residence being stormed by crowds who carted off valuables ranging from large flat-screen TVs to luxury furniture. Similar scenes played out at the homes of lawmakers who had supported the allowance hike.

The unrest quickly spread to several regions. Local council buildings in West Nusa Tenggara, Pekalongan, and Cirebon were set ablaze. In Makassar, at least three people were killed after violent clashes and arson targeted the regional assembly building.

Prabowo’s Leadership Questioned

The escalating turmoil has placed the leadership of President Prabowo Subianto under sharp scrutiny. Despite having only been in office for a few months, critics argue that Prabowo has failed to contain the crisis of trust engulfing Indonesia’s political elite.

Prabowo canceled a scheduled state visit to China in order to personally monitor the situation at home. While some viewed this as a responsible move, many analysts argue that such gestures do little to address the underlying issue: the collapse of public trust in government institutions.

“Prabowo must take decisive action. Without genuine reform, the people will only drift further away, and the government’s legitimacy may crumble,” said a political analyst from the University of Indonesia.

Meeting with Religious Organizations in Hambalang

Amid mounting public pressure, President Prabowo invited 16 major religious organizations to his residence in Hambalang, Bogor, on Saturday (August 30, 2025). The meeting focused on ways to keep the nation calm and united during this period of tension.

Key organizations such as Muhammadiyah, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), and the Indonesian Islamic Da’wah Council (DDII) attended the gathering. The chairman of the Indonesian Muslim Students Association (PII), Nasrullah Larada, praised the meeting as a constructive step.

“At a time of heightened tension, communication and dialogue among elements of the nation must be strengthened. Dialogue is the best path forward, not vandalism or violence,” Nasrullah told reporters.

During the meeting, Prabowo urged religious leaders to help defuse tensions at the grassroots level and to encourage communities to resolve disagreements through constitutional and legal channels.

A Narrow Road to Restoring Trust

While the meeting with religious groups was seen as a positive gesture, public opinion remains clear: the government must deliver real reforms that benefit the people. Without structural changes, transparency, and firm action against corruption, Indonesia’s leadership risks losing its credibility altogether.

Observers warn that dialogue alone will not suffice. Concrete steps—such as pro-people economic policies, protection of civil rights, and accountability for state officials—are urgently needed to rebuild trust between the government and its citizens.

Unless such reforms are undertaken swiftly, the crisis of distrust could deepen further, threatening political stability and undermining President Prabowo’s leadership.
