MIKTA Meeting in Brazil Results in 5 Point Joint Communique

ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Retno Marsudi said that the MIKTA meeting in Brazil which was held on February 22 2024 resulted in a 5 point Joint Communique.

“The MIKTA meeting has produced a Joint Communique, which essentially contains MIKTA’s joint commitment as a positive force in handling global challenges,” he said, in an official statement, quoted Monday, February 26 2024.

Second, there is deep concern about the humanitarian disaster situation in Gaza, conditions in Ukraine and also on the Korean Peninsula. Third, the importance of international law, the multilateral system and the principles of the UN Charter. Fourth, the importance of strengthening MIKTA’s joint action and concrete collaboration to contribute to the world, including in it.

Fifth, highlighting the various achievements of Indonesia’s chairmanship, including 15 Joint Statements, and the implementation of the MIKTA Leaders Gathering which took place for the first time last year.

Furthermore, Retno explained that she chaired the meeting of MIKTA Foreign Ministers, considering that Indonesia was still Chair of MIKTA.

“At the end of the meeting, Indonesia has carried out a handover of MIKTA Chairmanship from Indonesia to Mexico,” he said.

According to him, Indonesia’s chairmanship of the MIKTA forum will last throughout 2023, in line with the celebration of 10 years of MIKTA cooperation.

“The Indonesian Chairmanship has made various achievements including holding a meeting of MIKTA Leaders in New Delhi last September,” he continued.

Apart from that, Retno also explained that at the MIKTA meeting, she also raised the situation in Palestine.

“I convey that Indonesia deeply regrets the failure of efforts to reach a resolution for a ceasefire,” he said.

Then, he stated that the UN Security Council had repeatedly failed to find a way out of the crisis in Palestine.

“This shows that not all countries are committed to implementing international law consistently. There are double standards that apply,” he added.

Apart from that, Retno emphasized MIKTA’s three roles as a positive force at the meeting of Foreign Ministers in Brazil. (AT Network)
