ASIATODAY.ID, DUBLIN — Chaos broke out in a Dublin suburb on Tuesday night after the alleged rape of a 10-year-old girl by an asylum seeker triggered public outrage and violent clashes outside an immigration facility.
According to The Irish Times, the suspect — reportedly a rejected asylum seeker from an African country who arrived in Ireland around six years ago — was arrested and taken into custody for questioning.
Protest Turns Violent in Saggart
Thousands of demonstrators gathered in Saggart, near the former Citywest Hotel — now converted into a permanent migrant shelter — where the incident allegedly occurred. The crowd threw projectiles at police officers, launched fireworks, and set fire to at least one police van.
Irish police deployed reinforcements and a water cannon to disperse the rioters and restore order. The unrest left several officers injured, while videos circulating on social media showed burning vehicles and clashes with riot police.
Victim Under State Care
The Child and Family Agency (Tusla) confirmed that the victim, who was under state care, was assaulted after she “absconded from staff whilst on a planned recreational trip in the city center.” The agency added that the child had been placed under supervision earlier this year due to “significant behavioral issues.”
Authorities said the suspect remains in custody as investigators have 24 hours to file charges or release him.
Government Leaders Condemn the Violence
Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin expressed deep regret and said state agencies had failed to protect the child.
“It is the fundamental duty of the state to protect the children of the state, and irrespective of the complexity or severity of any case, that duty must be fulfilled,” Martin said, October 22, 2025.
Deputy Prime Minister Simon Harris described the case as “horrifying” but urged the public to remain calm until the facts are fully established.
“It’s important that we have an opportunity to establish the facts and that the agencies also have an opportunity to present those facts,” he added.
Meanwhile, Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan condemned the attacks on law enforcement officers.
“Peaceful protest is a cornerstone of our democracy. Violence is not,” he stated.
Tensions Over Immigration Policies Intensify
The violent protest highlights growing tension in Ireland over the government’s immigration and asylum policies. Similar incidents have been reported in the UK, where public anger over “hotels for illegal migrants” has also sparked unrest.
Observers warn that unless the government improves transparency and community engagement, such riots could escalate and fuel anti-immigrant sentiment across the country. (AT Network)
