ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) has officially fired Shin Tae-yong, coach of the Indonesian national team from South Korea, on Monday, January 6 2024.
According to the General Chair of the Indonesian Football Association, Erick Thohir, the candidate to replace Shin Tae-yong is the architect of a team from Europe, especially the Netherlands. Erick also confirmed that one of the coaching candidates was former Dutch national team striker, Patrick Kluivert.
The presence of a coach from the Netherlands is considered by several parties to be very helpful in implementing the game system and tactics on the field. The reason is, the Indonesian diaspora players were raised in Dutch culture, so language problems will not be an obstacle for them.
Kluivert is considered by a number of parties to be the strongest candidate to become coach of the Indonesian national team. The well-known journalist from Italy, Fabrizio Romano, even said that Kluivert was ready to sign a contract with Indonesia, with a two-year work bond plus a two-year extension.
As a player, Kluivert won many titles with clubs Ajax Amsterdam, Barcelona and PSV Eindhoven. Apart from these three clubs, Kluivert has also worn the uniform of AC Milan, Newcastle United, Valencia and Lille.
However, as a coach, the 48 year old man has very few achievements and is still unable to win a major trophy. Since becoming assistant coach at AZ Alkmaar in 2008, Kluivert’s best achievement was bringing Twente U-21 to win the 2011/2012 Beloften Eredivisie. This competition is the highest level competition for reserve teams in the Dutch League.
After his career at AZ, Kluivert then tried his luck in the Australian League with Brisbane Roar in January 2010. He then returned to the Netherlands to become an assistant coach at NEC Nijmegen in August 2010.
In the 2011/2012 season, Kluivert moved to the FC Twente youth team, and succeeded in bringing the club to the championship title.
Kluivert was then approached by the Curacao football federation to become coach of the country’s national team in March 2015. With the Curacao national team, Kluivert failed to bring them to the 2018 World Cup finals, before then returning to a dual role by coaching Ajax A1 or the U-1 team. 19.
Entering July 2016, Kluivert tried a new role at French club, PSG, as Sports Director. After that, Kluivert became assistant coach to Clarence Seedorf with the Cameroon national team from August 2018 to July 2019.
Kluivert briefly became academy director at Barcelona after leaving Cameroon, but his time at the Catalan club was short-lived.
In May 2021, Kluivert returned to manage the Curacao national team as interim coach, while replacing Guus Hiddink who was affected by COVID-19. Most recently, Kluivert coached the Turkiye team, Adana Demirspor, starting in June 2023, but then left by mutual agreement in December of the same year. (AT Network)
