ASIATODAY.ID, FUKUOKA – A tanker carrying chemicals belonging to South Korea reportedly sank off the coast in Shimonoseki City, western Japan, Wednesday, March 20 2024. A total of eight people were reported dead, and two people are still missing.
It is known that the crew of the Keoyong Sun tanker, which weighs 870 tons, asked for help via radio at around 07.05 am local time. The Noji coast guard said a ship anchored near Mutsure Island off the coast of Shimonoseki capsized.
At the time of the incident, there were 11 crew members on the ship, with eight crew members being Indonesian citizens, two South Korean citizens and one Chinese citizen.
The eight people who were confirmed dead were among the nine people rescued, while another person who survived did not suffer life-threatening injuries.
The nine people who were evacuated were wearing life jackets. The search continues for the two missing crew members.
The ship was carrying 980 tons of acrylic acid, although there has been no confirmation of a leak. Warnings regarding strong winds and high waves had been issued at the time of the incident, according to local observatories. (Newswire/AT Network)
