ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The nuclear reactor company from the United States (US), namely ThorCon Group, is the company at the forefront of realizing the first Nuclear Power Plant project in Indonesia. The reason is, ThorCon has so far received full support from the Indonesian National Energy Council (DEN).
ThorCon Group Chief Executive Officer Mark E. McGough stated that Thorcon plans to build a nuclear fuel factory in Indonesia in the next three years.
“ThorCon Group has also identified several challenges in building a 500MW Thorium Molten Salt Reactor (TMSR500) type Thorium Power Plant,” said Mark during an audience with DEN regarding the Kick-Off Meeting and Consignment activities regarding the Construction of the First Nuclear Power Plant in Indonesia, Monday, May 27, 2024.

Chief Executive Officer of PT Thorcon Power Indonesia, David Davvaney stated that Thorcon Power Indonesia is very serious about investing in building a Thorium Power Plant in Indonesia.
Just so you know, ThorCon plans to build the first nuclear plant in Indonesia which is located in Bangka Belitung and is planned to be operational in 2032 with an investment value of IDR 17 trillion.
Member of DEN Indonesia, Agus Puji Prasetyono, said that the 500MW Thorium Molten Salt Reactor (TMSR500) type Thorium Power Plant could be considered as one of the carbon-free power generation solutions that is worth considering to build to meet electricity needs in Indonesia.
Likewise, another DEN member, As Natio Lasman, stated that nuclear would be one of the points in changing the National Energy Policy so that it would fill a portion of the national energy mix in 2032 of 250MW.
Meanwhile, DEN member Yusra Khan explained that nuclear has the lowest emissions compared to other generators, and in terms of system reliability, nuclear is very reliable.
Meanwhile, DEN member Agus Pramono said that according to a survey, public acceptance of the nuclear plant construction plan was more than 70 percent.
“All regulations needed to build a nuclear plant in terms of energy mix and nuclear installation safety permits are adequate. In the Draft National Energy Policy Government Regulation, nuclear has been included and will contribute to the energy mix in the future. “Currently, harmonization of the Draft Government Regulations on National Energy Policy is being carried out at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights and is expected to be completed in June 2024,” he stressed.
As a reference, on December 13 2023, PT ThorCon Power Indonesia and the Indonesian National Energy Council (DEN) have signed a joint agreement to realize the plan to build a Nuclear Power Plant based on Molten Salt Reactor 2×250 MW (TMSR500) technology as a candidate for the first nuclear plant in Indonesia. Indonesia. The plan is that the TMSR500 will be built in the Classa area, Central Bangka Regency.
This agreement covers various aspects including preparing proposals and carrying out various studies carried out by ThorCon Power based on recommendations issued by the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment.
The studies carried out include a review of existing regulations as well as a proposed legal basis and Electricity Supply Business Plan which can be the basis for implementing a 2×250 MW TMSR-based nuclear plant, as well as conducting a technical study to determine the potential of areas in Indonesia that are worthy of further development. as the site location for the 2nd TMSR500 unit.
“The aim of this memorandum of understanding is that DEN strongly supports the construction of the first nuclear plant in Indonesia because it is included in the net zero emission roadmap in 2032. We see that so far only PT ThorCon Power Indonesia has seen progress starting from reporting site studies, laboratory results to acceptance community,” said Secretary General of the National Energy Council, Djoko Siswanto.
