UN Regrets US Withdrawal from Several UN Entities

ASIATODAY.ID, NEW YORK — The United Nations has expressed deep regret over the decision by the United States to withdraw from a number of UN entities, following an announcement by the White House that has drawn global attention and concern.

In an official statement delivered by Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General António Guterres, the UN underscored that financial contributions to the organization are not optional but legally binding obligations under international law.

“Assessed contributions to the United Nations regular budget and peacekeeping budget, as approved by the General Assembly, are a legal obligation under the UN Charter for all Member States, including the United States,” Dujarric said on January 8, 2026.

UN Operations to Continue Despite US Decision

Despite the withdrawal move by one of its largest contributors, the United Nations reaffirmed that all its entities will continue implementing their mandates as entrusted by Member States.

The Secretariat emphasized that the decision will not halt the organization’s work across peacekeeping missions, humanitarian assistance, sustainable development programs, and global diplomacy efforts.

“All United Nations entities will go on with the implementation of their mandates as given by Member States,” Dujarric stressed.

The Secretary-General reiterated that the UN carries a fundamental responsibility to deliver for millions of people worldwide who rely on its presence—particularly in conflict zones, humanitarian crises, and regions facing climate and development challenges.

“The United Nations has a responsibility to deliver for those who depend on us. We will continue to carry out our mandates with determination,” the statement added.

Multilateral System Under Scrutiny

The US decision is expected to have significant implications for the future of multilateral cooperation and the international rules-based order.

Analysts warn that the move could weaken collective responses to global challenges, even as geopolitical tensions continue to rise.

Nevertheless, the United Nations made clear that its mission and legitimacy do not hinge on the actions of any single Member State.

The organization affirmed its commitment to uphold the principles of the UN Charter and to continue serving the international community with resilience and resolve. (AT Network)
