ASIATODAY.ID, TAIPEI – Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) has received official notification from the United States government regarding the sale of advanced surface-to-air missile (NASAMS) radars and systems worth US$1.988 billion.
In the face of increasing military pressure by China in the waters around Taiwan to disrupt the freedom of navigation of ships from various countries, Taiwan’s MOFA welcomes the support of the United States and like-minded partners to support peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait through various concrete actions.
Taiwan’s MOFA welcomes this decision and expresses its gratitude to the United States government for the support and service of weapons for the defense needed by Taiwan in accordance with the Taiwan Relations Act and the “Six Guarantees”.
This is the 17th military sale to Taiwan announced by the Joe Biden administration, to demonstrate the implementation of the policy of normalizing arms sales to Taiwan, ensuring Taiwan’s continued defense capabilities, and demonstrating the US government’s strong support for enhancing Taiwan’s defense resilience and deterrent power, as well as emphasizing the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
Taiwan Presidential Palace spokesperson Kuo Ya-hui explained that this military sale is the largest since President Biden took office in 2021. This step shows the US government’s strong commitment to Taiwan’s security.
“Taiwan will continue to strengthen its self-defense, maintain the rules-based international order, and ensure peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region,” Kuo explained in an official broadcast of Taiwan MOFA, October 28, 2024.
Facing the threat posed by China, Taiwan is committed to defending the motherland. Taiwan will continue to demonstrate its determination to defend itself, strengthen its defense capabilities and resilience, safeguard its free and democratic way of life, and achieve peace through strength. Taiwan will also continue to deepen its security partnership with the US to safeguard the rules-based international order, and promote peace, stability and prosperity in the Taiwan Strait and the Indo-Pacific region.
