ASIATODAY.ID, BEIJING – A new report from the Boao Forum for Asia highlights the rapid progress of eco-friendly technologies across Asia, positioning the continent to play a pivotal role in the global energy transition. The report underscores Asia’s potential to lead industries in battery raw materials, biodegradable plastics, and more.

Titled “Sustainable Development: Asia and the World Annual Report 2025 – Addressing Climate Change: Asia Going Green,” the Boao Forum attributes this progress to a combination of industrial capabilities and strong governmental support.

The report details significant advancements in renewable energy across the region, noting that 85% of China’s energy capacity now comes from renewable sources. Meanwhile, countries like Indonesia and Singapore are leading efforts in carbon capture and storage (CCS), a critical component in reducing global carbon emissions.

China, Japan, and South Korea are also at the forefront of the global lithium battery supply chain, a vital resource for the electric vehicle (EV) industry. At the same time, China is spearheading Asia’s efforts in expanding the green hydrogen sector, controlling 70% of the world’s hydrogen electrolyzer capacity.

The report also highlights ambitious emission reduction targets set by major emitters in Asia, including China, India, Indonesia, Japan, and Saudi Arabia. For instance, ASEAN economies are developing national climate action strategies and plans to implement their own emission reduction targets (NDCs).

Despite significant progress, the report stresses that while some countries have made strong commitments to sustainability, others still face challenges in solidifying their climate pledges.

In conclusion, the Boao Forum for Asia emphasizes the crucial role of Asia in global climate change mitigation efforts. Home to over half of the world’s population, responsible for nearly half of global GDP, and contributing more than half of the world’s carbon dioxide emissions, Asia’s leadership will be central in shaping the future of the global energy transition.
