ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources of the Republic of Indonesia together with the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) of Japan held the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) 2nd Ministerial Meeting, which is part of the emissions reduction initiative of countries in the region Asia and Australia.
In a press statement after the meeting, the Minister of Investment/Head of the Indonesian Investment Coordinating Board, Roslan Roeslani, representing the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, stated that the Ministers of AZEC partner countries met in Jakarta to send a strong message regarding decarbonization in the context of mitigating climate change, as well as ensuring joint support to accelerate the energy transition in Asia.
“The 2nd AZEC Ministerial Meeting calls for decarbonization action to accelerate the energy transition, as the key to achieving global Net Zero Emissions (NZE) or carbon neutrality. AZEC will work together to communicate AZEC principles and actions to the public and stakeholders,” said Rosan in Jakarta, Wednesday, August 21 2024.
Rosan detailed, to convey its various principles and actions, AZEC will hold annual events in each AZEC partner country, encourage cooperation outside AZEC partner countries, and promote projects under bilateral initiatives.
“In this regard, we are happy that this meeting also marks the signing of 21 MoUs regarding project cooperation between Indonesia and Japan. We also hope to continue to receive support from the private sector,” he hoped.
Rosan said, Indonesia also welcomes and hopes to actively participate in METI’s new initiatives, namely the AZEC initiative to promote Zero Emission Power, the AZEC Initiative to create Sustainable Fuel Markets, and the AZEC Initiative to build Next Generation Industries.
Japanese METI Minister Ken Saito, in his statement, said that this meeting resulted in a Joint Statement, namely Reaffirming AZEC Principles, AZEC Partner Countries Supporting Global Decarbonization, Promoting Policy Support and Collaboration in Tangible Projects, and Fostering cooperation beyond AZEC partner countries.
“We also launched AZEC Sectoral Initiatives as an attachment to the Joint Statement. We will focus on three initiatives to promote decarbonization, namely the electric power, transportation and industrial sectors,” added Saito.
Apart from the Ministerial Level Meeting, this event also launched the Asia Zero Emission Center, which will be a joint platform for AZEC member countries in carrying out decarbonization efforts.
On this occasion, Malaysian Minister of Economy Y.B. Mr. Mohd Rafizi bin Ramli, stated that he was committed to decarbonization efforts and achieving Net-Zero Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by 2050.
“In this context, we anticipate that AZEC’s contribution will play an important role in driving the shift towards sustainable and low-carbon energy solutions, which is critical for the future of the Asian region,” he said.
Rafizi also expressed Malaysia’s readiness to host the 2025 AZEC Ministerial Meeting. He stated that next year’s meeting represents not only Malaysia’s commitment to decarbonization but also dedication to building Malaysia into an energy hub. (AT Network)
