ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The Indonesian Parliamentary Delegation succeeded in passing 2 resolution proposals at the ‘Asia-Pacific Parliamentary Forum’/APPF in Bangkok, Thailand which took place from 26 – 28 October 2022.
The first resolution is entitled ‘Parliament and the Post COVID-19 Sustainable Recovery to Promote Democracy, Peace and Security’. While the second is entitled the resolution ‘Promoting Biodiversity and Green Economy for Inclusive Development’.
The two proposals from Indonesia to get full support from the delegations of a number of countries were present, among others; Canada, Australia, Chile, Mexico, China, South Korea, Japan and Thailand as hosts.
Chairman of the Indonesian House of Representatives Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Agency (BKSAP), Fadli Zon, who is also the Head of the Indonesian Delegation at the APPF annual meeting, emphasized at the ‘Working Group Politics and Security’ that although global challenges such as the war between Russia and Ukraine had a wide impact, regional challenges cannot be ruled out.
Therefore, it is better to focus the delegations of the countries present on how to strengthen cooperation in dealing with these regional challenges, making the APPF forum a forum to corner the parties.
“However, if we want peace, engagement is better than isolating. With engagement we can encourage negotiations,” said Fadli in a written statement quoted from the DPR page, Tuesday (1/11/2022).
The Indonesian delegation also had the opportunity to lead a meeting of the Sub Regional Group of Southeast Asian countries.
During the meeting, Deputy Chairperson of the Indonesian House of Representatives BKSAP Putu Supadma Rudana pushed for changes to the mechanism for selecting group chairmen, as well as the membership mechanism for the ‘Executive Committee’ from 4 years to 2 years. The proposed change received a positive response from the majority of Southeast Asian countries present.
The proposal will then be submitted to the ‘Executive Committee’ for consideration. The proposal is intended to provide the widest possible opportunity for Southeast Asian countries to become members of the ‘Executive Committee’.
On that occasion, the Indonesian House of Representatives Delegation also garnered support from the parliaments of Asia Pacific countries to strengthen green economy cooperation and biodiversity conservation through a resolution entitled ‘Promoting Biodiversity and Green Economy for Inclusive Development’. The resolution also received support from session participants at the ‘Working Group on Economic and Trade Matters’.
Putu said that Indonesia continues to strive for a transition to a green economy which is closely related to the post-pandemic recovery process. The series of APPF Annual Meetings attended by 20 countries closed with the signing of the ‘Joint Communique’ by all representatives of the APPF member delegations.
At the end of the event, there was also a handover of chairmanship from Thailand to the Philippines which will host in 2023. (ATN)
