ASIATODAY.ID, JAKARTA – The development of the Masela Block in the Arafura Sea, Southeast Maluku, is one of the government’s efforts to support national energy security and achieve the Net Zero Emission (NZE) target by 2060.

The Masela block itself has gas reserves of 2.3 trillion standard cubic feet (TSCF), which has the potential to produce gas of 12 billion cubic feet per day (bcf/d). The gas will be used to meet national energy needs, especially for power generation, industry and transportation.

On November 28 2023, the government approved Revision 2 of the First Field Development Plan (POD I) for the Abadi Field in the Masela Work Area. Revision 2 incorporates Carbon Capture Storage (CCS) activities into the project scope to capture the original CO2 and store it back in the Abadi Field. The initial target for this project is 2030.

The Director General of Oil and Gas at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Tutuka Ariadji, hopes that the Abadi Field Development will be implemented soon because it is in line with the government’s efforts to achieve the NZE target. Natural gas is a cleaner energy source, and the use of natural gas can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support climate change mitigation efforts.

“INPEX can carry out development activities for the Abadi Field according to the POD,” hoped Tutuka, in Jakarta, Sunday, December 3 2023.

The total gas reserves of the Abadi Field are 18.54 TSCF with cumulative gas production of 16.38 TSCF (gross) or 12.95 TSCF (sales) and condensate of 255.28 MMSTB. Production capacity 1,600 MMSCFD + 150 MMSCFD (pipeline), condensate 35,000 BCPD.

The current Participating Interest Holder in the Masela Work Area is Inpex Masela Ltd (65%) as well as the operator; PT Pertamina Hulu Energi Masela (20%); and Petronas Masela Sdn. Bhd. (15%).

The Masela Work Area Cooperation Contract was signed on November 16 1998 for a period of 30 years with 7 years compensation and 20 years extension. The contract will expire on November 15, 2055.

Tutuka added that the government will continue to coordinate with all stakeholders to ensure that the development of the Masela Block can run smoothly and on time. (AT Network)
